What event (gallery show, museum exhibit, etc.) in the next few months are you looking forward to, and why?
I hope to make it out to the Museum of Northern Arizona soon for their recently opened The Force is With Our People exhibit. They gathered some really cool artists to do some really cool things smashing pop culture and traditional Native arts. I am also looking forward to the Jim Henson exhibit at Albuquerque Museum next month because of Muppets!
What are you reading?
I just finished No Turning Back: A Hopi Woman’s Struggle to Live in Two Worlds by Polingaysi Qöyawayma. I also keep a finger in the Lord of the Rings series.
Interesting exhibit, gallery opening or work of art you’ve seen recently.
I was at a conference in California where I visited the San Diego Archaeological Center. Their exhibit on archaeology as a science was fun to see and gave me some flashbacks of my undergrad. I really enjoyed its playful elements; everybody likes to play like a kid. It made archaeology accessible and exciting.
What are you researching at the moment?
Right now I am learning more about the Bureau of Indian Affairs relocation and termination policies, plus starting to dig into Pueblo architecture. I am also getting my feet wet in chemistry and objects conservation.
What is your dream exhibit to curate? Or see someone else curate?
I know it would be a huge topic, but I have an increasing interest in identity. In a globalized world, identity has become a question we each face. It covers issues of race, ethnicity, patriotism, LGBTQ, religion, ancestry, place and beyond. I think we need a place to explore our own identities and investigate the foundations of how identity is built. Then, maybe, it could lead to greater understanding between individuals and groups.—
